# Payment processing

Once a consumer has been identified and the payment provider confirms they are eligible to make purchases using Direct Carrier Billing, the merchant can initiate payment.

## Charging models

Bango supports both 1-step and 2-step payment models. The model used depends on the payment provider.

### 1-step charge

With a 1-step charge, funds transfer to the merchant immediately if authorization succeeds. Partial captures cannot be applied because the full authorized amount is transferred.

### 2-step authorization and capture

With a 2-step model:

1. **Authorization** creates the payment, returns a transaction identifier, and reserves funds.
2. **Capture** confirms the reserved funds should transfer to the merchant.

A merchant can submit a partial capture request when less than the original reserved amount should transfer. This may be useful if an item becomes unavailable after authorization.

<Warning>
  Only one capture can be performed within a transaction. After a partial capture, remaining authorized funds cannot be captured later. A new transaction is required for a subsequent payment.
</Warning>

## Refunds

A refund returns all or some of the funds previously taken from the consumer's account.

The Bango Platform supports partial and full refunds. It checks that the requested refund amount remains available against the original transaction, helping prevent refunds beyond the originally captured amount.

Multiple refunds can be processed up to the total amount originally captured.
