# Check consumer eligibility

> Check whether a consumer is eligible to see, take up, or be provisioned with an Offer.

Check eligibility at the point in the consumer journey where you need to decide whether an Offer can be shown, taken up, or provisioned.

The type of check you use depends on where the consumer is in that journey.

## Before you begin

Before checking eligibility, identify:

* The consumer.
* The Offer or Offers involved in the journey.
* Which stage of eligibility you need to check.
* The consumer information required by your configured eligibility integration.

## Choose the eligibility check

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Offer eligibility">
    Use offer eligibility while building the consumer's available Offer selection.

    **When to use it**

    Before the consumer selects an Offer.

    **What it checks**

    Whether each Offer should be available to that consumer according to the Reseller's eligibility rules.

    **What to do with the result**

    1. Identify the consumer.
    2. Request eligibility for the relevant Offers.
    3. Review the eligibility status returned for each Offer.
    4. Use the result in your offer discovery journey.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Purchase or redemption">
    Use purchase or redemption eligibility when the consumer attempts to take up an Offer.

    **When to use it**

    After the consumer selects an Offer and before provisioning continues.

    **What it checks**

    Whether the consumer can successfully purchase or redeem the selected Offer.

    **What to do with the result**

    1. Identify the consumer and selected Offer.
    2. Check eligibility for that Offer.
    3. Review the returned eligibility result.
    4. Continue to provisioning when the consumer is eligible.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Content Provider">
    Content Provider eligibility applies during provisioning when the Content Provider needs to validate the consumer before accepting the requested product or benefit.

    **When it happens**

    During provisioning, before the relevant Entitlement is created.

    **What it checks**

    Whether the consumer meets the Content Provider's eligibility rules for the requested product or benefit.

    **What happens**

    1. The Reseller starts provisioning the Offer.
    2. DVM performs the configured Content Provider eligibility check.
    3. The Content Provider evaluates the consumer against its eligibility rules.
    4. DVM uses the response as part of the provisioning flow.
    5. Provisioning continues when the required eligibility check succeeds.
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

## Understand eligibility results

An eligibility check tells you whether the consumer is eligible, not eligible, or whether eligibility could not be supported or determined for the request.

The response can also include information that helps the Reseller determine what to do next in its consumer journey.

For the exact response fields and status values, see the [Eligibility API](/api-reference/eligibility/check-user-eligibility).

## What happens next

* If the consumer is eligible, continue the consumer journey.
* If the consumer is not eligible, use the result to determine the appropriate next action.
* If eligibility is unsupported or unknown, apply the behavior appropriate to your integration and consumer journey.
