# Manage users and roles

> Manage Partner access, environments, user roles, and permissions in DVM.

User Management controls which Partners a person can access, which environment they can work in, and what they are permitted to do.

Human access is managed at **Partner + Environment** level. Users do not need access to individual Regional Entities to use Partner-level applications such as Dashboard, Care, or User Management.

A **user role** defines the DVM applications and actions available to a person for a Partner and environment.

  Partner roles and user roles are different. A Partner role describes how the business participates in DVM, such as Reseller or Content Provider. A user role controls what an individual person can do after signing in.

## Review user roles

From **Account**, open **Roles & permissions** to review the user roles available to you.

A role shows the permissions that are enabled for the users assigned to it. Permissions are grouped by DVM capability, such as Care, Dashboard, and User Management.

Depending on your permissions, you can:

* View a role and its enabled permissions
* Review the users assigned to a role
* Edit a role that you are permitted to manage

Some system-managed roles can be viewed but not edited.

## Edit a user role

Before changing a role, review the users assigned to it.

Changes to a role affect every user assigned to that role.

To update a role:

1. Open **Roles & permissions**.
2. Select the role you want to manage.
3. Update the role name or enabled permissions where permitted.
4. Review the change.
5. Confirm the update.

## Review users

From **Account**, open **Users** to view the people who can access DVM.

For each user, you can review the Partners and environments they can access and the user role assigned for that access.

Depending on your permissions, you can add a user or edit an existing user's access.

## Assign Partner and environment access

When granting or changing user access, define:

* The **Partner** the user can access
* The **environment**, such as Sandbox or Production
* The **user role** that controls what they can do

A user can have access to more than one Partner, and their permissions can differ by Partner and environment.

Removing access to a Partner or environment removes the permissions associated with that access once the change is confirmed.

## Regional Entities

Do not assign human access to individual Regional Entities.

Regional Entities represent technical connectivity for a Partner in a region and environment. See [Regional Entities](/partner-management/regional-entities).
